Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled when you use the Daria Laoshi application and its supporting services.

1. Overview

Daria Laoshi is a language-learning application that provides study sets, practice modes, optional account synchronisation, AI-assisted set creation, and Reading Assistant functionality.

We do not sell personal information, display third-party advertising, or use the application for cross-app behavioural tracking.

Some features operate entirely on your device. AI-assisted and synchronisation features require information to be transmitted securely to supporting services.

2. Guest Mode

You may use Daria Laoshi without creating an account.

In Guest mode:

• ordinary study sets and learning progress are stored on your device;
• account synchronisation is not used;
• content submitted for AI-assisted conversion or Reading preparation is transmitted for processing;
• queued Reading inputs may be stored temporarily in private server storage until the job completes, fails, is cancelled, or expires;
• completed Guest Reading results are accessible only to the device holding the corresponding protected Guest job credential.

Guest content is not automatically converted into account content. Importing Guest data into an account requires an explicit user action.

3. Optional Accounts

If you create a Daria Laoshi account, we process:

• your chosen username;
• an internal account identifier;
• a securely derived password hash;
• protected session information;
• data you choose to synchronise.

Plain-text passwords are not stored.

Session credentials are stored securely on the device using Apple Keychain. Server-side session records use protected token representations rather than storing the reusable token in plain text.

Daria Laoshi does not require an email address for application-account registration.

4. Study and Reading Data

Depending on the features you use, Daria Laoshi may process:

• study-language profiles;
• vocabulary and collocation sets;
• original words and phrases;
• translations;
• learner pronunciation;
• supported reading marks;
• remembered-card state;
• Quiz and Typing results;
• language and translation preferences;
• Reading Assistant documents;
• pronunciation and translation hints requested during reading;
• learning-difficulty evidence;
• Reading interaction statistics;
• Recent and Kept Readings;
• deletion, retention, and synchronisation records.

For signed-in users, supported data is stored by the Daria Laoshi service to provide synchronisation across devices.

For Guest users, completed ordinary study data normally remains on the device unless it is intentionally submitted for AI processing.

5. AI-Assisted Processing

AI-assisted features may process:

• typed or pasted vocabulary;
• photographs, screenshots, or selected image areas;
• text recognised locally through optical character recognition;
• an optional limited surrounding context image when a rough selection requires context;
• the requested translation language;
• generated study cards;
• pronunciation;
• supported reading marks;
• translations and prepared reading documents.

This information is transmitted over an encrypted connection to the Daria Laoshi service and then processed using an AI service provider.

Reusable AI-provider credentials are stored only on the server and are not included in the distributed application.

The current integration requests provider-side response storage to be disabled where that option is supported. Processing by the AI provider remains subject to the provider’s applicable terms and privacy practices.

6. Reading-Job Processing

Reading preparation may continue as a server-side job after you leave the Reading Assistant screen or after the device application is suspended.

To provide this functionality:

• selected Reading images, OCR text, and limited selection context may be stored temporarily in private server storage;
• temporary input files are not publicly accessible;
• Guest jobs use a protected high-entropy job credential;
• raw Guest job credentials are not stored in plain text on the server;
• temporary inputs are deleted after completion, failure, cancellation, or expiry under the service’s retention rules;
• completed signed-in results may be added to synchronised Recent Readings;
• completed Guest results require the corresponding protected Guest credential.

The app does not claim that iPadOS continues executing application code indefinitely while suspended. The server job can continue independently, and the app checks its status after becoming active again.

7. Operational and Security Information

The service may process limited technical information required to operate and protect the application, including:

• request and job identifiers;
• date and time;
• route and response status;
• processing duration;
• input and output counts and sizes;
• model and aggregate usage information;
• sanitised error categories;
• pseudonymous client or account references;
• network information used for abuse prevention and rate limiting.

This information is used for:

• service functionality;
• reliability;
• troubleshooting;
• security;
• rate limiting;
• capacity and cost management;
• detecting misuse.

Normal diagnostic logs are designed not to contain:

• passwords;
• bearer or Guest job credentials;
• reusable API credentials;
• raw images;
• raw OCR text;
• vocabulary or reading content;
• long encoded payloads.

8. Local Device Storage

The application may use:

• UserDefaults;
• private application-support files;
• private cache files;
• Apple Keychain.

Some cached information may be removed automatically by the operating system or by Daria Laoshi retention rules.

Deleting the application may remove locally stored Guest information, subject to Apple platform behaviour and device backups.

9. Synchronisation and Retention

Signed-in data is retained while required to provide account functionality and according to the current content-retention rules.

Temporary Reading-job inputs are retained only for processing, cancellation, failure handling, and expiry.

Operational diagnostic information is retained for a limited operational period.

Inactive accounts and retained content may be removed according to the current retention configuration and user-facing account rules.

10. Sharing of Information

Information is shared only where needed to operate Daria Laoshi, including with:

• infrastructure and hosting providers;
• the AI service provider used for conversion and Reading preparation;
• Apple platform services used by the application;
• authorities where disclosure is legally required.

We do not sell personal information to advertisers or data brokers.

11. Security

Measures intended to protect application data include:

• encrypted HTTPS transport;
• password hashing;
• protected session and Guest job credentials;
• private temporary storage;
• access controls;
• request authentication;
• ownership checks;
• rate limiting;
• bounded payload sizes;
• privacy-safe diagnostic logging.

No electronic system can be guaranteed completely secure.

12. Your Choices

You may:

• use Guest mode without creating an account;
• choose whether to create an account;
• choose whether to import Guest data into an account;
• delete study sets and readings;
• cancel supported pending Reading jobs;
• sign out;
• delete your account and synchronised Daria Laoshi data through the application;
• contact support with a privacy question.

Deleting an account does not automatically remove unrelated support emails you previously sent.

13. Children

Daria Laoshi is an educational application. Account creation and AI-assisted processing should be used with appropriate parental or guardian supervision where required by applicable law.

We do not knowingly use children’s information for advertising or behavioural profiling.

14. International Processing

Supporting infrastructure and service providers may process information in countries other than the country where you live.

15. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy when application functionality, service providers, retention practices, or legal requirements change.

The current version will be published on this page with an updated revision date.
